TOLLY GROUP REPORT COMPARES VIRTUAL DESKTOP IMPLEMENTATIONS FROM CITRIX SYSTEMS AND VMWARE

VMware View 3 deploys faster, and delivers more comprehensive, efficient image and storage management of virtual desktops than Citrix XenDesktop 2.1

Boca Raton,Fl   10 February 2009

Tolly, the industry’s premiere independent testing and strategic consulting organization, today released a new report that focuses on virtual desktop implementations from Citrix Systems, Inc. and Vmware, Inc.

The Tolly report, conducted in December 2008, evaluated the installation of the VDI products, as well as the process for deployment of virtual desktop environments for some 30+ virtual users.

Tests showed that the Vmware View 3 VDI solution deploys more simply and more rapidly than Citrix XenDesktop 2.1. Vmware provides more comprehensive, efficient image and storage management of virtual desktops. It provides end-users with a quality of experience on the LAN that matches or exceeds that offered by the Citrix solution

“As virtualization become mainstream in the Enterprise,” says Kevin Tolly, founder of The Tolly Group. “Companies will need virtual desktop software to install easily, come packed with features and put the smallest possible demand on the network and storage systems.”

Testers found that Vmware View 3 Premiere’s initial deployment is significantly simpler than the process required by Citrix. Tests show that Citrix XenDesktop requires 11 different steps during the initial deployment including manual configuration of Microsoft infrastructure components and the download of a non-Citrix application framework. Where Vmware View does not require users to configure existing infrastructure components manually.

Among the reports chief findings:

* Installed more rapidly and with considerably fewer steps and less manual intervention source: FPR
* Provides simpler image management that makes more efficient use of disk
* Requires no manual configuration of Microsoft Active Directory (AD) or DHCP
* Allows management of all VDI functions through a single, Web-based GUI
* Provides equivalent end-user experience on LAN as Citrix for Microsoft Office applications
